Corn Gluten Meal was discovered in 1986 to have the ability to inhibit the germination of grass and weed seeds in test plots at the Iowa State University Research Foundation. Further tests revealed that corn gluten meal contains naturally occurring substances which inhibit the growth of the seed’s tiny feeder roots, causing the weed seedlings to die before they ever have a chance to grow. Corn Gluten Meal is an animal feed by-product of the manufacture of corn starch. Used as directed, Weed Prevention Plus is safe around people, pets, and wildlife. Weed Prevention Plus will not harm beneficial insects, soil organisms, ponds or stream life.

Application Recommendations:
Apply 1 bag (25 pounds) over 1,500 square feet in the Spring & Fall for pre-emergent protection. That’s about the same size as half of the co-op’s parking lot; usually 1 or 2 bags will work for a typical southwest Minneapolis lot. Weed Prevention Plus is granulated and easy to apply with a spreader. Homogenous pellet provides uniform nutrient and herbicide distribution.

For uniform distribution, set your spreader for half the recommended rate, then cover your lawn in two different directions.

After application, a light, steady rain is perfect to begin to dissolve the granules. If weather is not on your side, lightly water your lawn after application. Spring application should be one of your first outdoor projects, from about April 5th to May 5th. Proper application provides up to 90% effective weed control in the first year for dandelions and crabgrass. Regular application of corn gluten improves performance year after year.

Safe for children, pets and wildlife.

Caution: Corn gluten can inhibit the germination of desired seeds. Do not apply to recently seeded lawn or garden areas until new plants are established.

Corn gluten is effective controlling annual weeds like: Crabgrass, Dandelions, Clover, Curlydock, & Purslane. Corn gluten does not control perennial weeds like Creeping Charlie. Linden Hills Natural Home has instructions for using Borax to fight Creeping Charlie.
Corn gluten creates a non-toxic barrier that stops weed seeds from growing.
