Halloumi: Stephanos's Favorite Cheese

There are only a few things in our store that have their origins on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. One is Stephanos; the other is Halloumi cheese.

So if you’d like to know just why Halloumi is such a wonderful cheese, ask Stephanos (you’ll find out why he’s pretty wonderful at the same time). Stephanos says in Cyprus, Halloumi is served before dinner, often grilled, as part of a mezze platter, the Cypriot version of tapas. Slice it thin, and make a delicious grilled cheese sandwich. Or serve with melon slices!

Halloumi is a harder cheese, so it stands up well to heat, as evidenced by Stephanos’s favorite summertime use for Halloumi:

  • Soak bamboo skewers in water
  • Thread alternating chunks of pineapple with chunks of Halloumi
  • Grill until the pineapple is thoroughly warmed and the cheese is getting soft and melty
